As end-of-life care enters what many are calling its “second wave,” hospice and palliative care services in the United States continue to expand, bringing better quality of life at the end of life to increasing numbers of individuals and families. Patients and families are more often achieving the kinds of outcomes they say matter most—better symptom management, clearer communication about the patient’s condition, greater sensitivity to spiritual and cultural issues, and control over the site of death.
Despite this progress, many challenges remain: How can we effectively extend care to underserved populations? Best support family caregivers before and after the loss of their loved ones? Communicate effectively as patients and families transition from curative to palliative care? Maintain our compassion as caregivers while we assist patients and families to live with hope in a world in which loss is inescapable? Strengthen our resilience as professional caregivers and teams? Continue to improve the quality and variety of services that we provide to patients and families at this time of their greatest need?
This conference brings together leading experts who will examine key issues in contemporary end-of-life care. These visionary pragmatists will present ideas, models and programs that can enhance the evolution of advanced-illness care at local, national, and international levels. Conference attendees and participating organizations will be a second faculty for the conference as they network and share innovative ideas and services already contributing to enhancing care at the end of life.
Featured Faculty Include:
Charlie Garfield, PhD, Founder, Shanti Project; Professor of Clinical Psychology, University of California, San Francisco–The Wisdom to Care: Deepening Empathy at the End of Life
LaVera Crawley, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor, Stanford University School of Medicine, Center for Biomedical Ethics–Racial, Cultural, and Ethnic Factors Influencing End-of-Life Care
Kathy Egan-City, MA, BSN, President and Executive Director of Millennium Research Institute–Unwinding My Life: A Proactive Approach to Meaning Near Life’s End
Steve Pantilat, MD, FACP, Professor of Clinical Medicine, University of California, San Francisco–Better Words to Say
Linda Tavel, MD, MBA, FAAHPM, Physician, Symptom Management Consultants, LLC–Intimacy in Palliative Medicine: The Journey We Cannot Overlook
Dale G. Larson, PhD, Professor of Counseling Psychology, Santa Clara University Department of Psychology—Conference Chairperson and Panel Discussion Facilitator
7 hours of CMEs and CEUs will be available to physicians, nurses, social workers, psychologists, and marriage and family therapists.
